The number of medium and severe injuries at the Sealine during the ongoing camping season has considerably increased, Dr Aish Obeid, assistant director of Hamad Medical Corporation's (HMC) Injury Prevention Programme has pointed out.
She told local Arabic daily Arrayah that the Trauma Centre at HMC receives a number of such cases almost every week. The majority of such cases are caused by the reckless driving of quad-bikes without using the necessary protective gear, especially helmets.

She said that head and backbone injuries are the most reported among these cases. She noted that there has been a considerable rise in the number of injured boys as the rate increased by 30% in 2018 and 40% during last year. She stressed that it requires more collaboration among the stakeholders to avoid these accidents in the first place.
Dr Obeid said that the injured below 15 years are often transferred to Sidra Medicine while the older cases are referred to HMC Trauma Center. Further, children of the same family included in an accident can be still treated at the Centre. As for the simple injuries, these are often treated at the Sealine clinic and the medium injuries are referred to Al Wakra Hospital while the severe injuries are taken to HMC Trauma Center by the helicopter ambulance.
She further pointed out that children below 12 should never be allowed to drive quad-bikes unattended because they would not be able to make the proper response in case of accidents. Accordingly, parents should pay extra care to such issues to avoid the eventual accidents. She also observed that most of the injuries are suffered by youths and the number of injuries drop considerably among the older people. In 2020, around 100 cases of severe injuries were reported and in 2019, the figure stood at around 80 , which means that the number of such injuries are on the rise and more efforts should be exerted to avoid this trend.
