Students at GEMS Wellington School – Qatar (WSQ) were treated to a sports-focused training session designed to help them “stand out from the crowd”, courtesy of the school’s collaboration with UK-based award-winning sports education provider LLS and the Steven Gerrard Academy.
As part of the school’s commitment to ensuring students are fully prepared for their lives after secondary education, WSQ principal David Wilson invited LLS and the Steven Gerrard Academy to deliver an “inspiration session” that sought to demonstrate to students that even those not especially gifted with athletic ability can achieve great things in the sports industry. The session discussed the vast number of careers and employment opportunities possible through the world of sports – from sports science to journalism, to sports psychology, physiotherapy and performance data analysis – citing the high number of course graduates from LLS and the Steven Gerrard Academy who have gone on to achieve successful careers in the competitive sports industry, a press statement noted.Steven Gerrard was a leading footballer for England and Liverpool and is now a successful club manager.Wilson said, “Our Year 10-12 students found this a really thought-provoking session, as it also talked about the importance of them being able to ‘stand out from the crowd’ when applying for university and future employment opportunities, and the ways they can achieve this. This was just one of a series of talks from industry specialists that we have planned for our senior students, in line with our commitment to providing them the very best opportunities to succeed.”Marc Garnett, commercial director at LLS, said: “On behalf of LLS and the Steven Gerrard Academy, I would like to take this opportunity to offer my sincerest thanks to the staff from GEMS Wellington School – Qatar. The welcome I received from the school principal, David Wilson, and the PE department was exceptional.“All learners were encouraged to focus on their upcoming exams with a mindset to exceed their target grades; we have recommended that students start to volunteer in their local communities and have asked them to proactively research the benefits of professional networking.”Dino Varkey, GEMS Education Group CEO, added: “Preparing our students for the future is a cornerstone of our teaching and learning objectives at GEMS schools. We believe that there is genius in every child, which is why we offer these kinds of personalised learning programmes to ensure they understand and appreciate the full breadth of future pathways and careers available to them. We’re excited to begin what we hope will be an ongoing partnership with LLS and the Steven Gerrard Academy, and look forward to seeing what our students might later achieve in this field.”As a result of the session, a number of students at WSQ have already reached out to LLS, with several set to access free online sports science sessions delivered by the organisation.
