Philippine School Doha (PSD) students from across all grade levels recently won in the national round of the Philippine International Math and Science Olympics (PIMSO) competition.
The competition, held at the Edgar V Bondoc (EVB) Gymnasium and selected classrooms, was coordinated through the Math and Science teachers of each grade level.
In the Science category, 38% of the total eight participating students from the Primary Department received the Gold and Silver awards, respectively. The remaining 25% were Bronze awardees.
A total of 45 students from the Intermediate Department joined in the same category. The percentage of recipients of the Gold, Silver, and Bronze awards were 16%, 13%, and 53%, respectively.
Fifteen students from the Junior High School Department also participated in the Science category; 33% of the total number of competitors won Gold awards, followed by Silver (20%) and Bronze (33%).
The Preschool Department had 13 students participating in the Math category with 15% of them winning Gold followed by the Silver (23%) and Bronze (38%) winners. The Primary Department sent a total of 15 students who won Gold (27%), Silver (6.7%), and Bronze (20%) awards.
Also in the Math category, only 30% of the total 20 Intermediate Department students got Bronze awards, while in the Junior High School Department 5.3% of the total 19 participating students won the Gold award, followed by the Silver (21%) and Bronze (5.3%) award winners.
The competition’s objective is to advocate for the excellence and proficiency of the students in the areas of Mathematics and Science using global contests as its medium. Moreover, PIMSO also aims to “promote Philippine tourism to other country partners worldwide.”
“PIMSO is another opportunity for our students to expand their experiences in becoming champions,” said Office of Student Affairs vice principal Melissa Montayre, who commended the students’ “hard work.” The results of the international round held last December 11 are yet to be released, Montayre noted.
