Some airlines in India, Japan and the UAE have announced cancellation of US flights amid 5G wireless deployment plan set to start Wednesday.
Dubai's Emirates airline announced that it will suspend flights to several destinations in the United States "as of Jan. 19 until further notice" because of concerns over 5G mobile deployment.
The move is "due to operational concerns associated with the planned deployment of 5G mobile network services in the U.S.", the company said. It said the destinations include Boston, Chicago, Dallas Fort Worth, Houston, Miami, Newark, Orlando, San Francisco, and Seattle.
Meanwhile, AT&T and Verizon agreed to a partial delay in activating their 5G networks following an outcry from US airlines, who warned the rollout could lead to travel chaos.
The latest delay came after the chief executives of the largest airlines in the United States warned the day prior of a "catastrophic disruption" to travel and shipping operations if the rollout set for Wednesday went as planned.
Telecom giants spent tens of billions of dollars to obtain 5G licenses last year, but as the launch date approached, aviation industry groups raised concerns about possible interference with airplanes' radio altimeters -- which can operate at the same frequencies.
