The UK embassy in Doha highlighted the importance of sports to mark this year’s Qatar National Sport Day, citing that the UK “has a really strong culture of sport”.
“During the pandemic our sporting culture was really important to our national psychology and well-being. That’s a tradition that we bring here to Qatar, making sure that our culture of sport and Qatar’s great strive in the culture of sport come together to create something amazing; and we are all looking forward to take part and to watch a tremendous World Cup here later this year,” UK chargé d’affaires Alex Cole said in a press statement.
“I’d like to take this opportunity to wish His Highness the Amir and all the people of Qatar a happy National Sport Day,” she added.
Cole said the UK is working closely with Qatar on a range of issues related to the World Cup and other sporting ventures.
“Qatar is an amazing host. We are looking at ways that the UK innovation can help run and deliver the World Cup. A really good example is the FIFA World Cup 2022 countdown clock on the Corniche, which was designed by a British company.
“It’s a small part of our bigger contribution to the whole. We are also working on security co-operation and discussing other issues, not least of which how will British fans and participants will enjoy a safe and successful tournament,” she said.
