The Organ Transplant Programme of the Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) has been witnessing continuous progress with a success rate of 100%.
Hamad General Hospital medical director and Qatar Centre for Organ Transplantation director Dr Yousef al-Maslamani told local Arabic daily Arrayah that the centre has been constantly working for development while making progress.
“The programme provides therapeutic and surgical services through multidisciplinary medical teams. These include surgeons and transplant specialists in addition to nursing staff along with specialists of physiotherapy, rehabilitation, therapeutic nutrition and social work in order to ensure the provision of comprehensive healthcare and integrated for patients,” he said.
Dr al-Maslamani noted that hundreds of kidney and liver transplants have been successfully performed and last year the centre was able to successfully perform the first lung transplant in Qatar.
Six liver transplants, according to him, were performed from deceased donors last year with all cases being 100% successful and the recipients in good health. “Since the opening of the Qatar Centre for Organ Transplantation in 2011, a total of 45 liver transplant cases have been performed. Also, , 38 kidney transplants were performed last year, including 21 from living donors, and 17 from deceased donors,” he said, noting that all cases are in good health and lead normal lives.
Dr al-Maslaman explained that 866 cases are followed up in the post-transplant stage in specialised clinics periodically to determine the health status of each patient and provide the necessary medical care in a timely manner in the event of any complications.
“There are more than 1,500 patients on dialysis and they are under observation by conducting tests and controlling diabetes and blood pressure until they are ready for kidney transplant," he said.
According to Dr al-Maslamani, the transplant programme is based on a unified waiting list of patients, regardless of the nationalities. The organ donation registry, launched in 2012, has now got half a million donors in total.
He added that the Qatar Organ Transplant Programme is keen to benefit from the experiences of specialists and academic experts in the field of education and research related to organ donation in Qatar and the rest of the world.
