The penultimate stage of the university poet competition, organised by the Ministry of Culture's Qatar Poetry Centre, Diwan Al Arab, starts today at Qatar University.
A total of 12 poets are participating in the Nabati and al-Fasih categories. The Nabati (poetry derives its dialect from the people of the Arabian Gulf) and in al-Fasih (eloquent) competition, poets have to compose 15 verses. The topic, great companion Omar Ibn al-Khattab was chosen for al-Fasih poetry, while al-Khansa was chosen for Nabati poetry.
Poet Shabib bin Arar, director of the Qatar Poetry Centre, explained to local Arabic daily Arrayah, that at the end of the previous stage, 12 poets from the two categories, Nabati and al-Fasih, were qualified.
During the stage which starts today, only six among them, will be selected, three each from Nabati and al-Fasih. During the competition they will present poems prepared in advance while the new stage of the university poet will revolve around historical figures, with the aim of urging poets to search, learn and broaden their horizons.
“Those who did not qualify during the first stages of the competition were placed on the agenda of the Arab Diwan to be supported in the future," the official said stressing that the participating poets displayed commendable standards throughout the competition stages.”
Speaking on behalf of the Qatar Poetry Centre, Abdulaziz bin Hazeem al-Maliki confirmed that the competition up to this stage has proven its success and its ability to be an important tributary to enrich the poetic scene in Qatar from talented people. He stressed that the Qatar Poetry Centre intends to continue to sponsor and support these poets on an ongoing basis.
The competition is open to citizens and university and military colleges students. The prizes amount to QR180,000 for the two categories, Nabati and al-Fasih.
