The penultimate stage of the Universities Poet Competition, held by the Ministry of Culture's Qatar Poetry Center “Diwan Al Arab”, was launched on Monday.
Six poets each are competing in the Nabati and al-Fasih categories. Three winners each will be selected on March 1. Monday's activities witnessed the participants composing 15-line poems and competing in topics determined by the jury.
The topic for Nabati category was the great companion Omar Ibn al-Khattab while al-Khansa was chosen for al-Fasih. Throughout the stages of the competition, the poets participated with various poems, some of which revolve around topics chosen by the jury.
A number of poets confirmed that the event meets the aspirations of poets from among students and members of civil and military universities and colleges.
Shabib bin Arar, director of the Qatar Centre for Poetry "Diwan Al Arab", said the jury consists of poets: Muhammad Ibrahim al-Sada, Zayed Kruz, Ali al-Masoudi, Lahdan Sabah al-Kubaisi, and Mubarak al-Khalifa.
The value of the competition prizes is QR180,000, with the winners in either category receiving QR50,000 (first), QR25,000 (second), QR15,000 (third).
