The President of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo expressed his deep thanks and appreciation to the State of Qatar for its great and remarkable efforts in organising the 6th Summit of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), in these difficult circumstances the world is going through due to the Covid-19 outbreak.
In his speech yesterday at the opening session of the 6th GECF Summit, he noted the importance of consultation on the principles and objectives on which the forum was based, including encouraging dialogue between producers, consumers, and other stakeholders, creating a platform for exchanging opinions and facing challenges such as low prices due to the Covid-19 pandemic, terrorism, and organised crime, especially in the Gulf of Guinea, where the threats are great to all neighbouring countries.
He affirmed that natural gas is an important source of clean and sustainable energy in the world, adding that this is a goal that member states support because of its role in fighting poverty and reviving the economy, as well as being in line with the goals and principles of member states in aspiring prosperity and well-being for all peoples of the world.
In a related context, he referred to the (Malabo Declaration), the capital of Equatorial Guinea, at the conclusion of the 4th Africa-Arab Summit in 2016 in terms of achieving sustainable development, combating poverty, realising the aspirations of peoples, and the need to overcome the difficulties associated with that.
He stressed that "solidarity" is a principle that must be adhered to, because it leads to equal opportunities and economic independence, affirming that addressing crises also requires searching for great and innovative solutions to confront them. He called on member states to work collectively to find a model that allows them to defend their principles.
He added that the GECF member states have to face the common problems related to the development and the repercussions of the global economic crisis that affects all member states' economies, with unity and collective joint work.
He said that the GECF member states' cultural diversity should contribute to enriching the model that member states adopted to reach the highest levels of production of natural gas. He pointed out that since the GECF establishment, the member states have worked to write the history of co-operation in this vital field to achieve desired goals and discover new areas of co-operation.
President Nguema affirmed Equatorial Guinea's commitment to the GECF principles, calling for the exchange of information, strengthening co-operation, and facilitating co-ordination among member states to reach the desired common goals.
He reiterated that defending the interests of member states and the sovereignty of natural gas-producing countries concerning their economic resources, requires continuous co-operation and dialogue, wishing the summit every success in achieving its goals.
