The Nepal embassy in Doha on Monday started issuing e-passport for Nepali nationals in Qatar. The embassy had started receiving e-passport applications through live enrollment system since February 6, a statement said.
The Nepal embassy in Doha is the first Nepali Mission abroad to launch e-passport services and issue e-passport to Nepali nationals abroad, it was explained.
Handing over the first e-passport, charge d'affaires Lakshuman Khanal explained that the Government of Nepal has launched e-passport services to replace the currently used Machine-Readable Passport in a phased manner.
Foreign Minister of Nepal Dr Narayan Khadka had inaugurated the e-passport personalisation center at the Department of Passports in Kathmandu on November 18, 2021 and handed over the country's first-ever e-passport to Satya Mohan Joshi, a 102-year-old historian.
Various administrative districts within Nepal and Nepali Missions abroad have started e-passport services now while the remaining districts and Missions are in the process of arranging for the same.
The embassy has also requested eligible Nepali nationals in Qatar to electronically apply for e-passports from the website of the Department of Passport of Nepal (https://emrtds.nepalpassport.gov.np/) before visiting the embassy for live enrollment. The embassy has issued detailed notice on the process of filling up the electronic form as well as the list of required documents in its website www.qa.nepalembassy.gov.np and its facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/eondoha) .
The embassy has further notified Nepalis in Qatar that current Machine-Readable Passports can be used until the date of their validity. Hence, there is no need to apply for e-passport for those who have a valid Machine-Readable Passport. Nepalis whose Machine-Readable Passports are expiring within a year, however, need to apply for e-passport as and when needed.
