The Centre of Empowerment and Elderly Care (Ehsan), of Qatar Foundation for Social Work, has launched the "Creativity Boxes Initiative" under the slogan "You Can Do It." Acting Executive Director of Ehsan Khaled Abdullah said the initiative is part of the approved projects in the centre's strategic plan to empower elderly and raise awareness of their ability to remain productive, pointing out that it aims at highlighting the role of older women and enhance their abilities.
He stressed the keenness of Ehsan to achieve co-operation, mobilisation, support and advocacy through a series of community partnerships in the country and the signing of a number of memorandums of understanding with government and private state institutions, bodies and civil society institutions. Sheikha al-Kubaisi, who suggested the initiative, explained that the idea of the creativity boxes is based on delivering gift boxes to participating elderly women.
She said the boxes contain tools for simple handicrafts, which they can use to make products, and contains also an educational video explaining to the participants how to use the tools in the box. She said that the centre will display these products in local exhibitions and open the way for visitors to view and buy them, stressing that the centre aims, through this initiative, to empower the elderly women, develop their skills, support their self-confidence, highlight their hobbies and productivity, and encourage communication between generations, where mothers will make the crafts with their family members.
She explained that the workshops will include "wax, perfume, decoupage, 'baffy' thread and wool bags." The workshops target women from the age of 60 and above and the group surrounding the elderly woman from their families, children and grandchildren. Participants in the programme must be a citizen or resident of Qatar aged 60 years and above and can choose only one box. Registration can be done by calling the number provided in the announcement of the initiative on Ehsan's social media platforms. (QNA)
