The Indonesian diaspora in Qatar held a medley of traditional dance last Friday. The activity was held at Al Bayt Stadium, where the opening of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 will be held.
Those involved in the performance were the art directing team of Puspa Qinarya, Sanggar Messaied, and Sanggar Saman Al Khor. The dancers comprised children, teenagers and adults.
In the Nusantara (archipelago) dance medley, the performers presented the Sajojo dance from Papua, Sirih Kuning from Jakarta, and Saman dance from Aceh.
In opening remarks, Indonesian ambassador Ridwan Hassan said that in addition to promoting the Indonesian culture, this initiative could also improve Qatar-Indonesia bilateral relations.
Hassan, who has served in Qatar for a year-and-a-half, also conveyed that the Indonesia-Qatar cultural co-operation would enter a new phase – notifying that Indonesia is in the selection process as a partner country in the Year of Culture 2023.
“In the spirit of friendship between the two nations, I invite the Indonesian diaspora to participate and contribute to the success of the Qatar-Indonesia Year of Culture event,” he added.
Indonesian Community Association in Qatar chairman Ahmad Syarnubi Fatah described the Indonesian community in Qatar as very dynamic, and "having been continuously engaged and involved in promoting Indonesian culture and dance."
"Before this, the Indonesian community members also appeared at the FIFA Arab Cup fan zone, where we also presented traditional Indonesian dances," he pointed out.
