Qatar has announced the renewal of its support for the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) with $15mn annually for three years (2024-2026), as it attaches high priority to supporting counter-terrorism efforts at the national, regional, and international levels and the UN central role in that, QNA reported.
This came in a speech by HE the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sultan bin Saad al-Muraikhi before the opening session of the Annual Forum of Beneficiaries of Technical Assistance, held by Qatar and UNOCT.
He affirmed Qatar's commitment to making all possible efforts in continuous co-operation with the UN and various international partners to get rid of the scourge of terrorism and violent extremism.
The minister said Qatar attaches importance to combating the scourge of terrorism and violent extremism conducive to terrorism, and is committed to international instruments and relevant UN resolutions and the integrated implementation of the UNOCT strategy.
He added that Qatar, believing that preventing and combating terrorism are among the areas that require international co-ordination and co-operation, actively participates in the various relevant international mechanisms, in addition to co-operation between national bodies and their counterparts in friendly countries.
He said the UN plays a central role in activating multilateral co-operation, pointing out that Qatar has been keen to support the activities of the international organisation in various fields, including combating terrorism.
He added that Qatar has strengthened close co-operation with various relevant UN bodies, including the UN Counter-Terrorism Executive Directorate, the UN Alliance of Civilisations, the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, the UN Development Programme and UNOCT.
HE al-Muraikhi said that Qatar's national expertise and capabilities contribute to the UNOCT activities, such as the Global Programme for the Security of Major Sporting Events and promoting sport and its values as a tool to prevent violent extremism, which is implemented in partnership with the International Centre for Sport Security in Doha.
