Katara - The Cultural Village is presenting a variety of activities during the holy month of Ramadan, catering to the various tastes and interests of visitors from different ages and backgrounds, with programmes that cover the cultural, religious sports, social, literary and sport aspects.
Katara has been decorated beautifully with lights, including those shaped like the crescent, inspired by the themes of the holy month. The Ramadan cannon firing to announce Iftar is a highlight. There are late night events leading to Suhour.
Before the start of Ramadan, Katara launched a charity campaign to offer humanitarian aid to the needy families and the less privileged members of the society. In addition, Katara has dedicated a space at its southern area for the productive families to display their products.
Katara also hosts a number of religious lectures and lessons at Katara Mosque after Taraweh prayers in cooperation Sheikh Abdulla bin Zayid al-Mahmoud Centre and the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs (Awqaf). The sports activities during the month have a number of competitions and championships including Ramadan Chess Tournament, Folk Games, e-games and other games. Other competitions include those for the best costume for Garangao and short story.
The literary and cultural activities would address various topics on some prominent writers and authors, and poets from a number of Arab countries in addition to the Arab Café activity and Ibn Al Raeeb Street. There are some dedicated forums to discuss publications by Katara publishing house, and a number of varied arts workshops for children at buildings 18 and 19 with focus on formative arts and Arabic calligraphy.
The Mahaseel market will continue daily during Ramadan from 8pm until midnight. The Katara Holy Qur'an recitation prize series will be telecast by at Qatar TV daily before Suhour and repeated at 11am the next day.
