According to initial indicators, the first edition of the Ramadan Book Fair, currently being held in the western square of Souq Waqif until April 16, has achieved impressive success due to the efforts of the Ministry of Culture and the organisers of the exhibition, and those who carefully chose the titles of the seminars that are in line with the spiritual atmosphere of the holy month.
Head of the technical committee at the Ramadan Book Fair, Abdulrahman al-Hitmi, said initial impressions indicated to the success of the first edition of the Ramadan Book Fair.
Speaking on the design of the Ramadan Book Fair and distribution of sites of the participating publishing houses which has facilitated easy access to all publishing houses by visitors, al-Hitmi explained that the Ministry of Culture and the organisers of the exhibition has good experience in organising exhibitions and various other events, considering Qatar was among the first in the Arab world to hold expos and major events.
Al-Hitmi indicated that the location for the Ramadan Book Fair at Souq Waqif was carefully chosen after several proposals were submitted. It was decided to hold the event in the western square of Souq Waqif because it is one of the places frequented by a large number of citizens, residents and tourists of different nationalities, al-Hitmi revealed .
With regard to selection of publishing houses for the exhibition, the head of the technical committee said distinguished religious publishing houses which had previously participated in the Doha International Book Fair were picked, as well as 35 publishing houses from nine Arab countries.
He stressed that publishing houses that have not previously participated in the exhibition will be given priority to participate during the next editions of the Ramadan Book Fair with the aim of diversifying the participation in the exhibition.
The Advisor to the Minister of Culture and Director of Qatar Cultural and Heritage Events Center, Dr Ghanem al-Ali, said in a statement that the Ministry of Culture is participating in the Ramadan Book Fair by displaying a group of its publications that differ somewhat from the rest of the publications participating in the exhibition.
He stressed that the current version of the Ramadan Book Fair will not be the last, as it is likely that many editions will be held in the coming years, especially after the initial indications of the success of the first edition, and its response to the aspirations of intellectuals and visitors.
The Ministry of Culture participates in a special pavilion in the Ramadan Book Fair, during which it reviews a group of its various publications and books, especially religious ones. (QNA)
