Sixteen male students from the English for the Communications II course at Foundation Programme (FP), the Deanship of General Studies at Qatar University (QU), visited Qatar-Finland International School (QFI) to share Qatari folktales.
The organiser of the event, QFI librarian Holly Crewe, arranged for the QU FP students to present stories in English to 450 children in 20 classes from kindergarten to grade 5.
The stories focused on Qatari culture and Islamic values from a collection of folktales written by QU FP students as part of the 'Tales of Qatari Heritage' project.
The students prepared for two weeks prior to the event under the leadership of Jeffrey Maggard, lecturer in the FP Department of English and lead for the project.
Mohamed Kadkhododaei, a student from the College of Business, said: “This was the first time in my life to tell a story to kids. It was amazing and most of them liked the story. Now I feel confident about telling stories to any group.”
The children of QFI, representing 62 nationalities, were thrilled to receive their special guests.
Sammy Cox (10) from 5A, listened to the story, 'The Donkey’s Tail'. He said, “Qatari culture is very interesting!”
“Hearing stories from Qatar’s rich tradition of oral storytelling was a very special experience for our students” said Nikke Keskinen, general manager and head of QFI School.
