As part of its charitable activities to support vulnerable groups in Qatar, especially during the holy month of Ramadan, Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS), in co-operation with the Public Works Authority (Ashghal), launched an initiative to ensure food security among labourers.
Serving the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the new initiative is part of the Stand Together (a social care programme dedicated to expatriate workers), one of the key target beneficiaries under QRCS’ local development strategy.
Food coupons were distributed to 962 labourers to help them to get Ramadan Iftar meals. The distributions were co-ordinated to take place at the labourers’ housing facilities in the Industrial Area, while observing maximum hygiene standards to ensure safe access to the beneficiaries.
Muna Fadel al-Sulaiti, executive director of Volunteering and Local Development Division at QRCS, said: “Just ahead of Eid-al-Fitr, I would like to send my best wishes to His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, His Highness the Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, the people of Qatar, and all Muslims everywhere.
“Our local development projects focus greatly on vulnerable groups, particularly expatriate workers, those who contribute to the country's huge constructions,” she added. “This initiative is one of QRCS’ year-round social welfare programmes. It embodies the values of solidarity among the organisations and components of society. It is our religious and national responsibility to support the unfortunate people and ensure their social security and protection”.
Stand Together is a year-round social development programme aimed at ensuring the welfare of expatriate workers through diverse forms of assistance such as health education, food aid, and hygiene kits. The ultimate goal is to improve their living conditions and achieve social integration.
