In another recognition for the Public Works Authority (Ashghal), the Roads Projects Department’s Local Areas Infrastructure Programme has been awarded by the International Communitas Organisation in the US in the Ethical & Environment Sustainability category.
This came in appreciation of its efforts to implement green initiatives across its projects, Ashghal said in a tweet.
The Communitas Award is given to exceptional programmes and responsible institutions that adapt their practices to the benefit of society. Ashghal was recognised for adopting positive environment practices and finding innovative solutions to preserve the environment and its resources.
The recognition has highlighted Ashghal’s efforts to make use of recycled products and reduce carbon emission. Some 40.71% recycled products were used in construction works that were completed until September 2021, while reducing 127,158 tonnes of carbon emissions.
Also, the initiatives resulted in the use of 7,355,352 tonnes of recycled products. These are in addition to recycling of 4,800,000 cubic metres of groundwater for construction works. Also, 4,461 tonnes of non-hazardous waste were recycled for construction projects while 948 tonnes of waste tyres were recycled into crumb rubber (CRMB).
A total of 10,001,027 tonnes of construction waste were diverted from landfill and 103,284 tonnes of carbon emissions reduced through efficient material transportation.
Ashghal’s Local Areas Infrastructure Programme is a nationwide programme that aims to develop the roads, drainage networks and overall infrastructure in all areas of Qatar to raise the standard of living for all citizens and residents. The programme provides a comprehensive infrastructure for new areas that lack infrastructure facilities, in addition to developing and enhancing the existing infrastructure in central and suburban areas. It also aims to increase the capacity of roads and utility services to meet the requirements of continuous urban development. This is in addition to the construction of link roads that connect villages and towns across the country.
The Local Areas Infrastructure Programme is a dynamic programme as projects are added, expanded or merged to meet the requirements of the planning entities and the continuous development across the country.
