Hamad Nasser al-Qadi warmed up in style for Friday's final round of the Longines Qatar Equestrian Tour Hathab, after winning the Big Tour Class on Thursday.
At Al Shaqab’s outdoor arena, the course set for 130-145cm Big Tour class proved to be a difficult one for the riders as none of them put in a clear round. Al-Qadi committed just one fault with his veteran 14-year-old stallion Andreas SPB Z as the pair clinched the Big Tour class 86.27 secs.
Faleh Suwead al-Ajami astride Larko Denfer came home fastest in 79.41 secs in the 11-rider field but an eight-second penalty pushed them to third spot. Mohamed Khalifa Albaker on Verona finished second in 81.25 secs with four penalties.
The final round of the fifth edition of the Hathab will be held today, with thrilling battles in store for the overall title. The Big Tour class is set up for a close finish between siblings Saeed Nasser al-Qadi and his brother Hamad Nasser al-Qadi. Saeed leads the points table with 246 points, with Hamad just eight points behind. A further five points behind his former champion Nasser al-Ghazali and Faleh Swaid al-Ajmi, making the final round an edge-of-the-sear thriller.
What’s interesting is that the fifth-placed rider Mubarak Yousef al-Rumaihi (227 points) and sixth-placed Mohamed Khalifa al-Baker (222) are also in contention for the title.
In the Medium Tour yesterday, leader Rashid Twaim al-Marri took the top honours as he holds a slender six-point lead over Cyrine Cherif going into today’s final round.
Al-Marri and Navaronne combined to win in 72.79 secs. Khalid Sanad al-Nuaimi astride Goliat finished second, while Abdulrahman Eisa al-Bukhari on Irschi was third.
In the Small Tour, Sheikha Fatima Jabor al-Thani triumphed with her horse Eddie in a time of 64.99 secs. Saoud Mohamed al-Kuwari was second with Ivar with Sultan Salem al-Naemi competing the podium with Higgs.
Yesterday, Al Shaqab arena was filled with fabulous activities for children, including henna and face paintings, bouncy castles, table football, table tennis and PlayStation gaming. The entry is free for spectators.
