Dr Raed al-Arini, a thoracic surgery consultant hired by Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) in Gaza, has performed a pneumonectomy for a 15-year-old child, putting an end to his day-to-day suffering since his birth, let alone the high costs of medical care incurred by his poor family.
“At the Al-Shefaa Medical Complex’s Department of Thoracic Surgery, we had Anas al-Attar, a child from northern Gaza,” explained Dr al-Arini. “Clinical examination and medical diagnosis showed that he had chronic bronchiectasis, which resulted in permanent shortness of breath. Frequently, he had to be admitted to ICU."

“In addition, there was a complete pulmonary erosion in the left lung, so it was decided to remove it,” he added. The boy received postoperative care for days to ensure no complications. This operation is part of QRCS’s surgical intervention project for poor patients in Gaza, which involves contracting consultants in major specialties such as cardiothoracic surgery, cardiovascular surgery, urology and orthopaedics, at a total cost of $1.4mn.
