The International Conference on Child Helplines, organised by the Protection and Social Rehabilitation Centre (Aman) began on Monday in the presence of Ahmed bin Mohammed al-Kuwari, CEO of the Qatar Foundation for Social Work.
The two-day event coincides with the International Day of Child Helplines, observed by the International Organisation of Child Helplines on May 17.
The conference aims to mobilise international and regional efforts for child helplines. More than 250 people, including representatives of 30 international and regional organisations, and decision-makers, academics and experts from Qatar and the world are participating.
The event discussed many topics related to child helplines and mechanisms of social protection for children. The Aman Centre revealed one of its biggest projects, by launching the 'Aman Shield' platform. It provides unique content in the treatment, rehabilitation and care of the target groups, in addition to providing guidance and advice on the use of Artificial Intelligence for children, parents, school specialists, as well as child care workers.
The Aman Centre also revealed that it has taken care of the child, Nayef al-Hail, the inventor of the colour recognition robot. The Aman Centre will develop the robot to suit targeted cases of children exposed to violence. During the opening ceremony, executive director Abdul Aziz al-Ishaq was honoured with the Distinguished Arab Personality Award in the field of child protection for 2022.
The inauguration was attended by a group of international and local dignitaries, led by Jaap E Doek, chairman of the Board of Directors of the International Child Helpline Organisation, and Chancellor Dr Abdulaziz bin Saud al-Subaie, chairman of the Board of Directors of the International Organisation for Child Protection based in Brussels.
The first session shed light on the approach of the Aman Centre and its experience in the field of child support lines and the most important services provided to protect the target groups of children, in addition to clarifying the challenges of working in the field of child helplines with the International Organisation of Child Helplines, and about the emergency response to help children in crises.
Al-Ishaq, also the chairman of the Organising Committee, described the event as the first international and regional meeting of its kind for child helplines.
“The conference is considered a turning point for the vision and mission of the Aman Centre and the relevant authorities in promoting protection and social rehabilitation for children, guided by the best international and regional practices.
"It is a reinforcement of the efforts of the Aman Centre in its prestigious position in the leadership of civil society organisations internationally and regionally in the field of child support lines.”
He also stressed that the conference will contribute to the development of work in the field of child support and the transfer of the distinguished Qatari experience to the world.
More than twenty keynote speakers from as many countries participated in six main sessions. They presented the experiences of their countries in order to find more solutions in the field of child support. Children also participated in managing some sessions as a distinct initiative adopted by the Aman Centre.
Student Al-Anoud Mubarak al-Hitmi presented the opening ceremony of the International Conference on Child helplines. The sessions dealt with topics related to Aman Centre’s approach to child helplines, the challenges of working in the field of child helplines, the emergency response to help children in political crises, in addition to the challenges of child helplines.
The Global Network of Child Helplines and the International Organisation of Child Helplines welcomed the conference, noting that it enhances advocacy, mobilises support, and activates protection mechanisms by expanding effective national, regional and international partnerships in the field.
