The Centre for Advanced Materials (CAM) at Qatar University (QU) organised a two-day short training course titled 'Workshop on Membrane-Based Water Treatment'.The workshop was held recently at the Research Complex in Qatar University.A number of engineers working in the field of water technology at Qatar Electricity & Water Company (QEWC) and Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation (Kahramaa) attended the workshop, which consisted of lectures and training sessions delivered by distinguished experts in the field. The workshop is a reinforcement of this vital industry in Qatar, particularly with regard to desalination using membranes and reverse osmosis (RO), which saves energy compared to the thermal technologies currently used in Qatar, as the country moves towards an energy-saving and eco-friendly alternative energy, QU said in a statement.Dr Mohamed Irshidat, director of CAM, said: “This workshop comes within the framework of the training and transfer of knowledge activities carried out by the Water Technology Unit (WTU) that was recently established at CAM in collaboration with the Unesco Chair in Desalination and Water Treatment.”The capacity of WTU has been built to focus on complete water characterisation using the state-of-the-art equipment needed for a detailed analysis of water and related chemicals, and develop/adopt new technologies suitable for Qatar’s water conditions, the statement explained.Further, the WTU contributes to developing technologies for increasing water capacity through water reuse from industrial processed water and produced water.
