*New port supports the fisheries and leisure cruise sectors
The Ministry of Municipality is all set to start the operation of the revamped Al Wakra Port with new moorings, service buildings, lights and other facilities. The port has 368 moorings, 188 boat stands and 180 boat docks.
Local Arabic daily Arrayah reported that these facilities will be provided to licensed fishing boats and cruise boats with a length between 22ft and 46ft.
The port has parking lots equipped to accommodate boats of different sizes and all the services needed by fishermen and owners of cruise boats and ships. These include floating docks with water, electricity and lighting services. These are in addition to service facilities and navigational aids in accordance with the latest international systems and standards.
The project strengthens economic development while upgrading the efficiency and sustainability of the port’s service facilities while facilitating unloading and towing operations for marine cruisers and preserving private property.
There are systems for firefighting and CCTV camera, boat landing chutes, refuelling stations, and administrative offices to serve fishermen and other sea-goers.
A number of fishermen and boat owners at Al Wakra lauded the port project by pointing out that it provides safe parking for the boats, especially after overcrowding occurred in the old mooring stations. They noted that the new port directly supports the fisheries and leisure cruise sector.
In 2018, the Ministry of Transport and Communications started building mooring facilities for private boats at Al Wakra, Al Khor, Al Thakhira and Al Ruwais ports through direct co-ordination with the then Ministry of Municipality and Environment’s Fisheries Department.
The goal is to provide some 1,000 mooring berths and regulate private boats' mooring operations in modern anchoring spaces. The berths will also keep boats safe from storms and high waves. The port will support the private sector to help boost Qatar’s economic development.
The project’s most important feature is the optimised use of the potential of Qatar’s harbours and establishments, aiming to reduce cost, observe environmental and sustainability standards and codes, and apply the world’s best practices in terms of project design and execution. The authorities have plans to increase the number of mooring berths in the future.
