Several indoor installations in Qatar have become major attractions during the summer, especially for art lovers who are spending the season in the country.
Kan Ya Ma Kaan (‘Once Upon a Time’) by Bouthayna al-Muftah, one of Qatar’s most popular emerging artists, can be viewed at National Museum of Qatar’s (NMoQ) Café 875 and was inspired by traditional Qatari jewellery and thahab or 875 (21 karat) gold. This artwork “explores the notion of a place and time” and has been designed to complement the museum’s contemporary architecture.”

‘Motherland’ by renowned Qatari artist Hassan bin Mohammed al-Thani at NMoQ.

NMoQ also houses Hassan bin Mohammed al-Thani’s ‘Motherland’, a unique and large-scale sculpture that conveys the artist’s link and “appreciation for the land, motherhood and national identity.”
This Qatar Museums (QM)-commissioned installation “also acts as a tribute to the region’s last generation of women who wore the battoola” but the artist’s original work dates back to 2002.

‘Rose III’ by renowned German artist Isa Genzken at Msheireb Downtown Doha’s M7.

Hassan al-Thani is an artist, scholar and collector who played a key role “since the 1980s in cultivating and preserving modern and contemporary art in the Middle East and North Africa”. He was also instrumental in the foundation of Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art.
At NMoQ’s VIP Lounge lies another stunning work, titled ‘Central Midkhan’ by Qatari artist Aisha Nasser al-Sowaidi. It “repurposes the concept of a home’s internal infrastructure.”
“Qatari artist Aisha Nasser al-Sowaidi rethinks the forms of daily objects within a household, moving traditional artefacts towards contemporary functions. Central Midkhan is designed to distribute scent in multiple directions simultaneously. When not in use, this industrial-looking installation creates a strong aesthetic statement,” QM said.

‘Rose III’ by renowned German artist Isa Genzken, housed at Msheireb Downtown Doha’s M7, continue to charm visitors due to its extraordinary beauty and the subject it represents.
According to QM, the 8m-high sculpture made of cast aluminium and galvanised steel was built “based on an actual rose picked by the artist, which was then scanned in 3D and reproduced on a monumental scale.”
“Genzken produced her first Rose sculpture in the early nineties, and it has since become one of the artist’s best-known works,” QM noted.

A popular and one of the most visited artwork, ‘Maman’ by renowened French-American artist Louise Bourgeois, located the Qatar National Convention Centre “reveals the beauty in an initially intimidating object”.
Made of marble, bronze and stainless steel, the gigantic public artwork has always fascinated visitors while exploring QNCC or attending some events.
“Bourgeois captures a fragile moment, where a protective mother carries her eggs. She explores the meaning of motherhood and alludes to the strength of her own mother, whom she lost at the age of twenty-one,” QM said.
Airline passengers departing and arriving at the Hamad International Airport also have the chance to explore several installations such as the Lamp Bear by Swiss artist Urs Fischer, Cosmos by French artist Jean-Michel Othoniel, Small Lie by American artist KAWS, as well as exceptional works by renowned artists like Adel Abdessemed, Maurizio Cattelan, Don Gummer, Keith Haring, Damien Hirst, Jenny Holzer, Marc Quinn, Anselm Reyle, Rudolf Stingel and Bill Viola.
