The Ministry of Municipality has opened fishing boat berths at Al Ruwais, Al Thakira and Al Khor, an official told local Arabic daily Arrayah.
A total of 130 berths are available at Al Ruwais port where as many as 387 are planned, Ismail al-Sheikh, head of the Fishermen’s Affairs Department at the Fisheries Department said.

At Al Thakira, about 40% of the berths have been distributed. The distribution process has started at Al Wakra. It was in 2018 that the then Ministry of Transport and Communications started work on building berths for private boats at Al Wakra, Al Khor, Al Thakhira and Al Ruwais ports through direct co-ordination with the then Ministry of Municipality and Environment’s Fisheries Department.
The berths are constructed in accordance with the latest global standards and systems, the official said.
The goal is to provide some 1,000 berths and regulate private boats' mooring operations in modern anchoring spaces. The berths will also keep boats safe from dangers such as storms and high waves.
“The berths are divided into three sections with one for each of the fishing boats, private boats and private ships. With regard to fishing vessels, they will remain in the old ports, and will not be transferred to new spots as they need a landing berth,” the official added.
