Rainwater piling on Corniche due to incomplete drainage work: Ashghal

President of Ashghal, Dr Eng Saad al-Muhannadi, has clarified that the rainwater piling on Corniche after the rain on Thursday was due to incomplete rainwater drainage work in the area.

Dr al-Muhannadi Saturday said in a series of tweets that certain contractors and consultants did not follow instructions on preparation for the rain season and necessary measures will be implemented.Heavy rains took the country by surprise on Thursday morning and the downpour saw rainwater accumulating in many areas of the city. Several longtime residents said that they have never witnessed such a rainfall in Qatar in the month of July. Many took to social media to highlight the impact of the rain at low lying areas including water-logging in some areas of Corniche.Dr al-Muhannadi in one of his tweets said: “Unusual rain expected in future years. We work arduously to reduce any impact. Yet, a network has certain capacity and design capability. Heavy rain leads to water accumulation to be automatically drained through network; however, ample time is required.”He noted that Qatar spent generously on a rainwater drainage network for Expressways. “A network has certain capacity. If rain volume is higher than such capacity, water piling is normal, to be automatically drained through network; but ample time is required,” he explained.“The amount of rainfall of last Thursday equals to the amount of rainfall in October 2018, although its impact did not exceed 6% from the same locations affected in 2018 proving the efficiency of the drainage network that was implemented and completed,” he continued in his tweets.
