Hundreds of thousands of students returned to school Sunday as the new 2022/2023 academic year got under way in Qatar.
The schools reopened after the summer vacation with Covid-19 precautionary measures in place.
Some private kindergartens and schools had earlier opened on August 16.

HE Buthaina bint Ali al-Jabr al-Nuaimi, Minister of Education and Higher Education, visited Al Wafa Model School for Boys and Moza Bint Mohammed Primary School for Girls, respectively, in the Al Thumama area, Sunday morning to check on the progress of the educational process at the beginning of the new academic year.







During the visit, she met with school officials and teaching and administrative staff, wishing everyone a successful year ahead in an attractive learning environment that promotes the quality of school life for students, the Ministry of Education and Higher Education said in a statement.
More than 225,118 students in 212 public schools and kindergartens, and more than 215,000 in 338 private schools and kindergartens, have returned to school after the ministry completed all the arrangements and requirements for the start of the new school year with full attendance.







The arrangements for the new academic year include a number of axes and initiatives announced by HE the Minister of Education and Higher Education to develop the educational system in Qatar during the next eight years to achieve Qatar National Vision 2030. The axes and initiatives were announced during the first educational meeting organised by the ministry under the slogan ‘A Flame of Learning’, which celebrated the start of the new school year.
The axes centre around students, teachers, schools and the ministry itself, while the initiatives are concerned with training and mentoring new teachers, focusing on the quality of student life, and excellence by designing different development paths for public schools, as well as developing mechanisms to support and follow up on schools’ performance.








According to the current health indicators related to the Covid-19 pandemic, and in co-ordination with the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH), precautionary measures related to combating the pandemic have been announced since the beginning of the academic year 2022/2023.
Sunday, students could be seen wearing masks as they returned to school, while other measures were also in place. Students also had to take a rapid antigen test before the start of classes.
Preparations for the start of the new academic year were not limited to educational institutions alone, but also included other parties concerned. These include the General Directorate of Traffic, which prepares a comprehensive plan each new academic year as part of the Ministry of Interior’s continuous efforts to achieve a safe and accident-free traffic environment and to maintain the safety of students and road users, especially in areas around schools.
The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) also plays a key role by carrying out road safety work around schools.
