The decision to move the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 opener ahead by a day came out of respect for the history of the World Cup, FIFA President Gianni Infantino has said.
He made the statement while addressing a press conference in Costa Rica, which hosted the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
According to the changed schedule, the opening match between Qatar and Ecuador will now be played on November 20. It was earlier scheduled for November 21.
Infantino said 2mn fans will attend the tournament, which will be an all-encompassing celebration and unlike other World Cups - it will be like a child visiting Disneyland for the first time, according to a tweet by Qatar News Agency.
He stressed that the organisers are doing their best.. "I have great confidence in the success of the tournament, which will be a unique experience for the fans," he added.
