* Minister of Labour meets Qatar Chamber Chairman
HE the Minister of Labour Dr Ali bin Samikh al-Marri met on Monday with HE Chairman of Qatar Chamber (QC) Sheikh Khalifa bin Jassim al-Thani and members of the QC Board of Directors. The meeting discussed a joint initiative between the Ministry of Labour (MoL) and QC regarding a motion to voluntarily approve an insurance policy for domestic workers for Qataris, through co-ordination between insurance companies and recruitment offices.
The motion, which will be approved, comes after a thorough and intensive study of market data to contribute to protecting the interests of all parties, especially the employer. According to the motion, the insurance policy covers a number of cases, including workers' unwillingness to do their job as well as workers' escaping, work injury, death, and the value of the travel ticket that will be claimed in cases covered by the policy. The insurance policy compensates the employer according to the extent of the damage.
The meeting was held as part of the Ministry of Labour's policy to consult the representatives of employers and inform them of the latest legislative developments, laws and regulations related to the local work environment. The two sides reviewed aspects of co-operation with the private sector and ways to support and develop them, and discussed the challenges facing this sector, especially issues related to work and workers.
HE the Minister of Labour and HE the QC Chairman were briefed on the services provided by the MoL office at the Chamber's headquarters to business owners and company managers in order to facilitate procedures and expedite the completion of transactions. HE Dr al-Marri highlighted the importance of joint meetings with the private sector to overcome obstacles and challenges in a way that contributes to the improvement of the work environment; stressing that the ministry adopts a consultative approach with the parties engaged in the labour sector to strike a balance in the labour market.
He also noted the MoL's keenness to continue co-ordination and co-operation with the Qatar Chamber with regard to labour issues, and to solve any obstacles that the private sector may face related to the services of the Ministry of Labour. For his part, HE Sheikh Khalifa lauded the MoL's efforts to open its office at the QC headquarters, noting that this office will be of great importance in terms of receiving and considering requests from business owners and reviewing them in record time.
He stressed the importance of insurance for recruitment offices engaged in hiring domestic workers, pointing to the existence of co-ordination between the two sides.
