MES Indian School marked the National Sports Day of India on August 29 to motivate students to participate in physical activities and ensure physical and mental fitness.
National Sports Day also known as ‘Rashtirya Khel Divas' is celebrated to mark the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand, an Indian field hockey player, regarded as one of the greatest in the history of the sport and widely acclaimed for his extraordinary goal-scoring feats in the international sports arena.
The chief guest of the programme, Yawar Ali, a former Indian international volleyball player who represented India in the Asian Games, lauded the initiatives taken by the school in promoting sports and games.
Ashraf Amgad El-Seify, Qatar's gold medallist at Asian Games for Men’s Hammer throw, and Irfan Ibrahim, a former student of MES who represented Qatar in the Asian Athletic Meet and is holder of a 21-year-old record in CBSE 100m race, were the guests of honour.
To mark the occasion, the school conducted events such as table tennis, badminton, triple jump, and long jump in which India won medals in the recently concluded Common Wealth games at Birmingham, UK.
The programme also featured sports-themed dances and a ramp walk where the tiny tots of kindergarten came dressed as eminent Indian sports personalities.
Junior Section students presented skating, football, and gymnastic performances.
Activities such as collage making, poster designing and essay writing contests were also held as part of the Sports Day celebrations.
Principal Hameeda Kadar said sports and games are essential for the well-being as well as the holistic growth of students. Akbar Ali K T, head of the department of physical education, co-ordinated the event.
