Ghana's Minister of Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, has stressed the importance of strengthening co-operation between his country and Qatar in sports and the youth in a process of bridging relations between the two countries. In an interview with Qatar News Agency (QNA) on the sidelines of his official visit to the country, he said that Ghana and Qatar have good relations, and that he would like to use the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 to deepen that relationship.
The Ghanaian minister praised Qatar for its efforts and readiness, as well for the size of its sport facilities (stadiums) to host the World Cup. The minister wished Qatar success in hosting this major global event, and for Qatar's efforts to be taken as an example to follow. He added that all the facilities he visited were excellent and exceptional: being the best preparations he has seen for the World Cup.
He expressed his pride in what Qatar has achieved, given the country doing its best, in addition to the fact that it will be the first Gulf country to host this tournament. He also thanked His Highness the Amir. He also thanked the organisers of the World Cup for their wonderful work, which he reckons was not easy. On aspects of co-operation between Ghana and Qatar, the Ghanaian minister said that Qatar Charity is providing support in Ghana: digging wells for those in need of water, as well as building schools and hospitals.
He thanked the Government of Qatar for its support and that he hopes that Qatar will also support Ghana with its basic sports infrastructure, as part of the World Cup legacy project. The minister recalled his experience of the 'million football initiative' in Ghana, which aims to collect donations from football federations, companies, and individuals, in order to distribute them to children. Speaking about African youth, the minister said: "It is a great opportunity and a great challenge, at the same time we have a high percentage of young people in Africa. In Ghana 70% of the population is young and we have to provide them with opportunities. Given that sports is one of the ways to give young people opportunities."
He expressed his country's need for support from Qatar and Africa, in order for Ghana to be able to make use of the talents of its youth, expressing his hope that Qatar supports sports development in the whole world, and in Ghana in particular. (QNA)
