The General Directorate of Traffic has held a workshop to seek solutions to the issue of increasing road accidents involving delivery bikes.
Colonel Jaber Mohamed Rashid Odaiba, assistant director of the Media and Traffic Awareness Department, told Qatar Radio that the number of such accidents has gone up in Qatar in line with the increase in the number of delivery bikes.
The workshop was held as part of the directorate’s efforts to reduce delivery bike accidents.
“There is a need for such workshops to find the reasons (for such accidents) and come up with solutions to the problem. Observations by the General Directorate of Traffic and Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), as well as statistics, show that one of the main reasons for these accidents is the rider’s focus on the phone while driving. Bike drivers use mobile apps to find the delivery location,” he said.
The official noted that the number of motorcycle delivery drivers with serious injuries, treated by the Hamad Trauma Centre (HTC) in the first quarter of 2022, has already tripled compared to the number of cases recorded during the same period in 2021.
“Ninety-three such cases were dealt with in the first quarter of 2022, while the corresponding number of cases stood at 29 during the same period in 2021,” he informed.
