Economic legislation will play a key role in enhancing Qatar’s business sector, an official of the Qatar International Centre for Conciliation and Arbitration (QICCA) at Qatar Chamber has said.
QICCA board member for International Relations Sheikh Dr Thani bin Ali al-Thani made the statement during the seventh edition of ‘Qatar Business Law Forum Conference’ held in Doha on Wednesday.
The event was organised by LexisNexis Middle East, in co-operation with strategic partner, Qatar International Court and Dispute Resolution Centre (QICDRC), as well as the Qatar Lawyers Association, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI), Al Sulaiti Law Firm, and several local and international law firms.
Sheikh Dr Thani said the conference comes at an important time as economic sectors across the country are preparing for Qatar’s hosting of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in November and December.
“The event constitutes a great opportunity to discuss economic laws and their role in facilitating the business environment in the state and supporting efforts to transform Qatar into a global economic and trade hub, as well as the relationship of laws with trade and its impact on business,” he said.
Sheikh Dr Thani underscored QICCA’s support as strategic sponsor of the conference, which shed light on new trends in Qatar’s business environment and the legal developments being witnessed in the country.
The event brought together Qatar’s foremost legal experts and professionals to discuss the latest legal developments and trends in the country and the region. Through its participation and strategic partnership in the conference, QICDRC aims to connect LexisNexis with Qatar’s local partners and strengthen its engagement with the professional legal community.
In his opening remarks, Faisal Rashid al-Sahouti, CEO of QICDRC, said: “Today’s conference is imperative to everyone as it not only sheds light on topical issues and events in Qatar’s legal ecosystem but also ultimately paves the way for future discussions about developments in the legal field that will be relevant for our nation and this region.”
A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was also signed between LexisNexis Middle East and the Qatar Lawyers Association during the conference, heralded by those present as a positive step for the enhancement of legal knowledge and information in Qatar.
Qatar Lawyers Association president Mubarak al-Sulaiti said: “The Qatari Lawyers Association continues its commitment to strengthening co-operation with legal bodies and institutions both locally and internationally by all means, which will benefit Qatar’s lawyers in particular and the Qatari legal community in general.”
Keynote speaker Hilal al-Khulaifi, director of Legal Affairs at MoCI, participated in the session on ‘What’s in the Pipeline for Business Law in Qatar’. He said: “The Qatari legislator was keen to issue new laws and keep up with the developments taking place in the state of Qatar, which helps in preserving the rights of both the business owner and the beneficiary or the customer.
“Among the laws issued was Law No 11 of 2021 regarding the protection of trademarks, copyrights, and related rights of the International Football Association (FIFA). The law stipulates special procedures for registering FIFA trademarks, which preserve the copyright and related rights.”
