Engineers Australia (EA) Qatar Chapter and United Development Company (UDC) recently organised a stadium building competition at The Pearl-Qatar amphitheatre as part of Qatar Sustainability Week 2022 (QSW) to raise awareness about reducing single-use plastics in Qatar. QSW aims to engage the community in a wide range of sustainability-oriented activities and plays a crucial role in raising awareness amongst the wider community while showcasing the progress Qatar has made in the areas of sustainability and green buildings.
The objective of the competition was to combine three vital factors that drive the engineering/construction and architectural fields -- Design Purpose, Materials and Progress. The winner was to work under pressure to design and construct the biggest stadium (design purpose) using the least/limited number of materials (sustainable/recycled materials) during defined time (progress). Mustafa El Cherkawi, organiser and creator of the event and Engineers Australia Qatar Chapter past president, said: “A great engineer is the one who can build eco-buildings, reduce the carbon footprint, and save resources for the future generations. It is great to see interest from the community. It is all about people’s development and I am very proud to continue leading such competitions every year. I enjoy giving back to the community by promoting the engineering field and raising awareness in our society.”
Nine teams along with their family members participated in the event representing different reputable engineering and academic organisations. The teams were given three hours to build their stadiums. Teams competed on three prize categories judged according to a consistent set of rules (size, cladding, realistic, details, materials, and concept) by the jury panel that consists of representatives from EA, QSW and UDC.
Abdullatif Ali al-Yafei, executive director, Public Services at UDC, welcomed the participants to The Pearl and highlighted the importance of sustainability. He said “participating in such a sustainable competition is a win for all team members”. The first prize winner for the biggest stadium using the least amount of materials (sustainable design) was awarded to The United Arab Nation team -- Abdel Aziz al-Bardawil, Amani al-Bardawil, Shaker El Samad and Khairallah Merheb who built a sustainable stadium with high details and finishes.
The second prize winner for building the biggest stadium regardless the number of materials used (structural stability) was awarded to Galfar Team - Arumugam Vaithya Pillai, Rahul, Aromal Shaji, Hashir Bran and Kushant Raj who built a hexagonal shape stadium representing Benzene which is a widely used industrial chemical found in crude oil and is a major part of gasoline.
The third prize for the most aesthetic appealing stadium (architectural perspective) was awarded to Al-Malabari Team - Dr Gazliya Nazimudheen, Fathima Zakkir Hussain, Shaza Akbar, Shabna AB and Shahna Banu who were unique, innovative and creative by designing The Arabic Oud Stadium. Tamer Naguib, president of EA Qatar Chapter, said, “Our success of such an event begins with a firm commitment from our chapter’s committee members towards sustainability, renewable energy, and green environment, coupled with the local community who value innovation within the engineering practice. It is also important to recognize the role of our partner, Earthna, for promoting this event during Qatar Sustainability Week 2022. Engineers Australia Qatar Chapter is committed to advance the science and practice of engineering for the benefit of the society.”
