QU launches student branch of Arab Association for Cyber Security

Qatar University (QU) announced that it has launched the student branch of the Arab Association for Cyber Security, with the objective of promoting the students' role in the area of cybersecurity systems, discuss future challenges and explore solutions, and discuss the co-operation mechanisms to establish joint researches and programmes concerning this matter.
The dean of QU’s College of Engineering Dr Khalid Kamal Naji said that the student initiative is aimed at raising awareness of the significance of cybersecurity at the individual and corporate levels, especially given that cyber-crimes, which had previously been confined to individuals or small groups, have become more pervasive and complex today with the expansion of the Internet. He said that the launch of this student branch came after the QU had announced the launch of the Arab Association for Cyber Security in co-operation with the Federations of Arab Scientific Research Councils in the Arab League.Union of Arab Scientific Research Councils secretary-general Dr Abdel Majid bin Amara said that the Arab Association for Cyber Security is a key associations that includes professionals in the field of cybersecurity and is aimed at establishing co-operation among Arab scientists and researchers in this field.Arab Association for Cyber Security founding president and associate professor at the QU’s Department of Computer Science Dr Noora Fetais said that governments worldwide have been scrambling to not only optimise the cybersecurity infrastructure, but also to project “soft” power in this field.She said that the “cyber power” requires an independent strategy that copes with all developments, in addition to helping countries that are incapable of competing in the cybersecurity race.Dr Fetais said that the QU is in the process of preparing a cybersecurity and cyber diplomacy course to be launched at the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies for affiliates of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.QU Student Activities Department director Abdullah Al-Mulla stressed the importance of enhancing joint Arab co-operation.
