The Ras Laffan Power Company (RLPC), has successfully implemented the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Project and obtained an accredited international certification in reducing greenhouse gas emissions under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) for its 'Medium Pressure Steam Condensate Water Recovery' project. A statement from RLPC, a subsidiary of Qatar Electricity and Water Company, said the completion of the project under The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) was recently published on the UNFCCC website. The CDM, a co-operative mechanism established under the Kyoto Protocol, has the potential to assist developing countries in achieving sustainable development, it was explained. The CDM allows emission reduction projects in developing countries to earn certified emission reduction (CER) credits, each equivalent to one tonne of CO2. These CERs can be used by industrialised countries to meet their emission reduction targets under the Kyoto Protocol. The mechanism stimulates sustainable development and emission reductions, while giving industrialised countries some flexibility in how they meet their emission reduction limitation targets, the statement noted.QEWC managing director and general manager engineer Mohamed Nasser al-Hajri said the achievement will contribute to strengthen the efforts of Qatari power companies towards sustainable development and rely on advanced technology to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. RLPC chairman engineer Soud Jaleel al-Ruwailli described the milestone as a significant contribution to Qatar National Vision of Environmental Management. Managing director engineer Abdullah Eisa Rasheed said the achievement demonstrates the great interest in contributing to the preservation of the environment in Qatar. He explained that RLPC is one of the first companies to obtain this certification, by investing in the opportunity to conserve energy and reduce emissions. The company was able to reduce greenhouse gas emissions i.e. for specific monitoring period by 12,015tCO2e, water recovery of 63.52 m3/hr, and annual energy conservation of 125,041mmBTU, Rasheed added.
