Qatar Central Bank (QCB) announced Saturday the issuance of the first national payment debit card - Himyan - in Qatar.
"Himyan is the first national prepaid card with a registered Qatari brand in Qatar. This comes as part of Qatar Central Bank's efforts to develop electronic payment services and enhance financial inclusion in the country," QCB said in a tweet.
The card, which will be issued by the local bank, is named after the money bag used by merchants in the past. It is similar to electronic cards issued by global payment networks.
QCB said the issuance of the card does not require a minimum account balance. The card also supports a contactless feature, and involves lower transaction fees for issuers, acquirers and merchants.
QCB further said the Himyan card is considered more secure as transactions are made locally via NAPS network, adding that the card can be issued by banking and non-banking customers to promote financial inclusion.
Himyan supports/allows transactions at all sale points, ATMs and local shopping websites.
