Kahramaa plays key role in Qatar's qualitative leap in electricity & water infrastructure

In the past 10 years, great efforts were made to achieve Qatar National Vision 2030, especially with regard to sustainability issues.The corporation took into consideration the issues of legacy and operational sustainability when planning this infrastructure.In this regard, officials in the corporation stressed that they are ready for the competition, saying it represented an opportunity for Kahramaa to accelerate its development process and keep pace with the amazing economic, development and urban boom Qatar has experienced, while eyeing global leadership in electricity and water services.Kahramaa completed the expansion of electricity networks to cover all the needs of sports facilities, in addition to five new substations to supply power to the World Cup stadiums at a total cost of about QR800mn, within the framework of its joint work with the responsible authorities in the country for the ongoing World Cup preparations.The Mehairja substation supplies Khalifa International Stadium, Al Wukair 1 substation supplies Al Janoub Stadium, Al Jahaniya 3 substation supplies Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium, Al Haidan substation supplies Al Bayt stadium, and Ras Abu Aboud 2 substation supplies 974 Stadium.The Department of Conservation and Energy Efficiency at Kahramaa also inaugurated around 30 charging stations for electric vehicles in co-ordination with the Ministry of Transport. The efforts of Kahramaa are central to the success of organising the first carbon-neutral World Cup in history.This is a major achievement that Kahramaa is proud of and expresses how seriously Qatar is committed to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Climate Agreement.Kahramaa relies on the pivotal role of Qatari engineers in all stages of planning, implementation, and supervision, out of its belief in the importance of supporting local talent, and its conviction that Qatari engineers have high levels of competency, responsibility, and honesty that qualify them to complete such important projects in accordance with the highest international standards.Specialised Kahramaa teams successfully developed alternative supplying plans for all stadiums and sports facilities to ensure the continuation of electricity service at the highest levels with no interruptions, befitting the level of the exceptional organisation of this major event.Kahramaa crews and technicians will be on standby throughout the tournament and around the clock, whether through the National Control Center, which adopts world-leading technology in control, supervision and monitoring, or through the crews present at the venues of the event.The corporation is ready to deal with any emergency.Kahramaa inaugurated the second control center for electricity, in order to enhance the electrical control system at the national level.There are 387 main stations, while the number of substations has reached nearly 18,000.Kahramaa also launched the operations center in line with FIFA requirements, where it will perform the task of following up the daily work progress in all parts of the country, moment by moment, and monitoring the electrical network, to direct the technical teams to the sites accurately and immediately in the event of any malfunction or interruption, to ensure continuity of the service during the World Cup. Hotlines for the center have also been adopted for quick response and communication.Biological water quality in Qatar reached 99.56% in the first half of 2022, above World Health Organisation (WHO) recommendations.The water quality lab ensures safety of drinking water in the country by testing samples on a daily basis. The lab will intensify its efforts during the World Cup to ensure the highest quality of water safety.Kahramaa also played a major role in adopting the cooling system technology in tourist areas and in World Cup stadiums. Energy conservation in those areas reached 40% of electricity and 98% of drinking water compared to conventional cooling solutions.These systems, in turn, contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, which reduce Qatar's carbon footprint, and highlights Qatar's commitment to climate action through its continuous pursuit of the goals of the Qatar National Climate Change Action Plan 2030, and enhancing its role in the state and society.
